Figured it was time to start my own build page so I can keep track of things... first up is this whole hog roaster that I acquired from my neighbor's widow after he passed.

Too good of a deal to pass up despite the amount of work it's gonna take to make this pretty again.

    @Bigdaddy4760 @Kanyon71 and everyone else!

Ok.. it's mine now.. gotta start thinking about a motor set up and other mods.

I'm open to changing anything on this.. even moving the drive to the other side.

I know I want the rotisserie to work as well as build a grate for the top to cook a ton of pork shoulders or chickens or whatever too by removing the rotisserie.

I've seen some high torque 12v motors and seen 110/120v motors with gear reductions etc. Throw out your ideas, links and thoughts.

Also saw this which I like the idea of the outboard arms and the lever action for the release of the drive chain.

If you have ideas share the source so I can add to my research list.

Gonna need ideas on painting and welding stuff too.

    TIA!
    Edit....
@bvbull200 I wonder if I can feed this gravity...

Maner is going to have more input on motors to me seeing as he deals with giant ground munching ones daily. :)

I prefer geared as it usually uses less energy to achieve the results.

I would also build a hinged loader. You set it in place load the pig on the bar, then pivot the loading mechanism up and lock the bar into the motor. You then unhook the loading frame and start the pit up. (Could draw it if I were home).

Heck a sketch on a napkin would suffice at this point for the hinged loading system.. I feel like I can envision what you're saying but I'd like to see something?

I think the final RPM should be around 2 and I need a system that can handle a potential unbalanced load in case it's not 100% perfect or things change during the cooking process.

What are your thoughts on 12v vs 110? I was considering 12v simply because it is a trailer and could be remote operated off a deep cycle battery with a solar charger attached?

I've came across some something like this that could be an expensive but fun option.

Honestly I'm open to anything at the moment but I don't want to stretch this out over months.. I'd like to move fairly quickly on this project

Hit up Harbor Freight this morning to pick up a few things I needed to get the trailer home...

You have a media blaster around you? Shouldn’t take much time to get it all stripped down.

I probably should get some real life friends to help me with these things... But then again.. I finally got it pushed out and hooked up

    IMG_20200715_132831488.jpg

Luckily it's only from one alley to the next to get this in my yard.

    IMG_20200715_134131149.jpg
Well she's home.. leaving it in the yard here to defunk this thing and begin the restoration!

I was hoping to find one at HF today but they didn't have one in stock... The search continues.

The handle on the lid is pretty far gone...
    IMG_20200715_143745576.jpg

Luckily, I had a painted dowel that was in my way and a few seconds a new handle is born.. even though it's temporary.

The lid/hinge is F ed up ... Those hinges need to come off and replaced...

    IMG_20200715_134911410.jpg

I'm thinking these hinges will be better.. likely 4 of them instead of 3

Gonna have to figure out that welding thing too.. haha

Alright I’m following and you are correct piss poor design and fabricating. Before I put my recommendations. What is your budget on this? I can name off a hundred things you have not thought off..

A hundred things I have not thought of is exactly why I started this thread!

I'd like to keep it under $1k but I also don't want to blow that all in 1 item.

My goal is to get a whole hog roasted before the fall.. I'm also going to make a tray that sits at the top of the bottom section to be able to do 10 shoulders or whatever ...

I could go a lot of directions so I am open to all ideas!

I’ll see if I can draw something up quick today or tomorrow. Have to finish off the stair railing at the cabin tonight if possible. :)
