Thank you for the wright up, it was very insightful. I was wondering if perhaps a clutch adjustment would fix my problem though. My transmission is starting to grind a bit shifting into second. I fell like I may just need to rebuild. But it does seem like my clutch just doesn't engage at the same spot it use to. Any thoughts?

what is happening with the pilot bearing and surrounding area when there Is Noise and the clutch is NOT pushed down
screeching at certain RPM ranges on the move, as a real time example
    thankYou! :)

My guess would be a faulty clutch release bearing ( throw out bearing ) or possibly a bent input shaft

    thankYou!
    here is my R150F story
something somewhere started making an odd noise now & then a bit before hitting 300k on all-original factory clutch parts aged about 25.5 years (never been opened)
first noticed noises climbing the grades in the Arkansas Ozark region, iirc it would screech in the 2100-2300 RPM range on most shifts 3rd 4th 5th
it was undiagnosable then at the local transmission shop i pay to investigate this odd noise because of its infrequent nature of occurence
then it started to also screech at 3000 RPM when entering an on-ramp to the freeway during the hot months (don't recall it also happening during the cold months)
tranny shop said clutch was working just fine as it should
so it went another 35k before a new noise developed! this time it would screech while coming into a slowed right-hand turn and downshifting into 2nd, pedal in & throwing into 2nd a loud grinding noise was heard but Never felt. I had a master tech at the Toyota dealer that had MT experience check that out and even he could not get that noise to replicate LoL
that release throw out bearing had then started to make a small amount of chatter, but not too bad yet imo. my hearing is exceptional and it did not bother me (unlike the t.o. bearing chatter does now after getting a replacement done which is another story to rant)

so after 341k trouble-free miles it was time to get all-new clutch parts! used OEM parts from the dealer except for the clutch cover assy which was on backorder, got an aisin from that rockAuto place to use.

the shop far away that i had dropped it off for repairs called me after opening up and showed me a pic of what the pilot bearing had been doing to the input shaft tip  put a nice little mushroom-like groove onto that tip
that must've been some of that awful screeching noise over the past ~50k miles was originating from
decided to get a rebuilt R150F from the Yota1 shop in CA shipped out across country to reinstall with the new clutch

truck has not ever been the same since, with concerning noises underneath + vibrations in the transmission shifter stick at certain RPMs in 5th gear that i had not noticed it ever doing that before

Yeah, it’s telling you that the most often used(and usually most heavily stressed)shift change is getting worn.

Trying to read up on the experiences of others on rebuilt r150f transmissions.

Are the noises described above after you installed the new yota1 r150f? How's everything going now, any updates? I'm thinking of getting a yota1 R150f installed and I'm curious...
Also, did you go for the .69 5th gear dyna option?

i did not know that .69 5th was an option!
at the time i found that my trucks input shaft was all roached from the pilot bearing seizing upon it
there was Already a rebuilt r150F at the Yota1 shop ready to ship out halfway across the USA

it has about 23k miles on it now
awful whiny noise is still there, could be the clutch parts but i don't really know
shifter stick still wobbles around like a hula dancer in 5th gear at certain speed range
fuel economy is still very much abnormal subpar to the historical MPG under similar conditions

there is also what appears to be a fluid weep seeping between the transmission and transfer case
i checked the transfer case level recently and it full, drip drip out
the transmission fluid level did not drip out when fill plug pulled but i can still touch the level with the bent pinky finger level test

but yeah the whiny noises after the new clutch and rebuilt transmission are still present
whiny in neutral and goes away with clutch pressed down, still not sure if that noise is from the transmission or the clutch parts :notsure:
abnormal whiny noise gets real bad once i am on the move and starting rowing through the gears

    Hey fellas,

I've got a rattling sound coming from my transmission that’s been around longer than I’d like to admit, but it’s gotten more noticeable lately. I’m thinking it could be a bearing going bad, and figure I might as well take care of the clutch at the same time. Ideally, I’d like to tackle the job myself, but I’m having trouble finding solid writeups or videos specifically for the R155F.

I looked through some of the information on the original post but some of the links are broken. Anyway, I did come across this link which is helpful: https://ether3al.com/FSM/taco05-06fsm/

Still, any additional info, tips, or guidance would be much appreciated.

    Truck Details:
    • 2011 Tacoma Regular Cab
    • 5-speed manual (R155F transmission)
    • 4x4
    • URD Short Throw Shifter
    • ~85,000 miles
    • OME 2" lift and 235/85-16 Geolander M/T
    • ARB front bumper
    • ARE cap, typically no weight in the bed unless I'm out camping or moving materials. I don't tow regularly unless I'm camping and pull my trailer ~1,500 pounds.
    Symptoms:
    • Rattling noise at freeway speeds (50+ mph), only in 4th or 5th gear
    • Happens only when coasting in gear (no noise under acceleration or in neutral)
    • Noise is intermittent—doesn’t happen every time
    • Seems to occur more frequently when the trans is warm
    • If I drive straight to the freeway (~1 mile from home), it usually doesn’t happen
    • If I drive around town first, then hit the freeway, it usually does
    • There are no other issues that I'm aware of. The transmission shifts great, the shifter is sturdy, and there are no other noises other than the occasional squeaky clutch pedal.
I’m thinking it could be the output shaft bearing or countershaft bearing. Anyone run into something similar?

    Clutch Recommendations:
If I go through with the job, I’ll be using OEM parts where I can. However, I'm looking for a clutch that’s reliable for light/moderate off-roading (climbs, steps, ledges, etc. I'm in the southwest so mud isn't typical). The truck isn’t a daily driver, more for camping and trail use.

Appreciate any help or input. Here’s a pic of the subject for good measure:
