the problem is moisture trapped in the frame. It will make it rust too

i live in an area that sees extreme humidity from time to time
so less chance for it all to evaporate thoroughly too i think!

Gonna probably buy a used frame but am considering buying these frame (repair/strengthening) sections from I think it's... Automotix.net. I'll cut a nice hole in frame where the afore mentioned will cover. I'll clean and treat inside of cutout/frame then cover and I guess weld these over the top. Stuck my finger in hole in frame the other day and discovered some large flakes. I have one more question but I'm gonna ask it seperately in following post.

What's the best way to administer some of the afore mentioned posts treatments for the rust problem?
What is best and easiest treatment. Need to get on it, Winter is coming. Here in Kansas it's rained like no other year. If we don't have 10 foot of Snow this year it'll be a miracle. Ugh, here comes the brine solution.

I use one of the Fluid Film guns, with the long wand, and 360 degree nozzle, but rather than Fluid Film, I use about a quart of heavy weight differential fluid. It is about the same viscosity as fluid film, so sprays about the same. I do the inside of the frame, and also anywhere else I can get to, excluding brakes, exhaust, up inside the bed, tail light cavity, and so on. Also use the standard spray nozzle to basically paint all of the remaining surfaces with the same fluid. Gives it a more manly scent than fluid film, and I think it sticks on a whole lot better. YMMV

wow!, it took 20 days for me to get started with the magnet tool, is working well but wow is it cumbersome, total garbage paint inside there
i am wasting time and winter is coming soon.... it is also getting darker out earlier
had a bunch of Wisconsin sand to hose out inside of frame too the other day, floor jacked rear and am starting on driver side

This guy has an interesting approach for lifting a bed to change a truck fuel pump. I wonder where he picked up the red stand that he's using to support the bed?

I think I'm going this route to remove the bed. I can put my engine hoist to good use.

i have not made it to this point of removal yet, and most likely won't until after winter is over!
are you finding some defective crackling crunchy paint way back up under there?

    ????

exactly how thick is the metal part where it transistions from C to box, its at an angle sort of and somewhat difficult to get to unless you're lifted

is the thickness of that particular piece the same thickness as the rest of the frame?
or is it the thickness of the bed and cab mounts, which are NOT very thick at all

does anybody have deets on this?

    I cant remember 100%
But I recall the C part being slightly thicker than the boxed section. However it is still weak and known to buckle in exttreme wheeling, and trailer hauling.

boxed my frame all the way to the back but there are some makers of frame reinforcement.

The easiest/quickest is just to remove the rust and weld steel in place of it and re treat that section of the frame. Although, if you want a long term solution you could do what I did and go on Facebook Marketplace and find a frame that was a replacement for the recall. I would highly suggest stripping it to the bare metal to re coat it yourself. HEAR ME OUT ON THIS remove the bed, support the engine, transmission, and cab. from there you will be able to remove the suspension system and lower the frame down. from there you should be able to slide a new to you frame under the cab and reinstall everything. with some luck this process cost me under $2,000. A word of advice is if you don't know how to install or remove something go on youtube and search tacoma 1st gen (something) replacement. this saved me hours on just some hidden bolts, with some tips by trained professionals. if you have any more questions feel free to reach out. we're all stuck in the rust together.
